Research & Development

The Dobuilevu research station is an all exclusive location for SRIF's sugarcane germplasm collection and sugarcane crossing work. The elevation above sea level, coupled with a certain degree of slope and direction of the land mass surface facing the sun have all but been thoroughly studied for more than ½ a century and has become the unique blend of characteristics of the location that promotes flowering by almost every sugarcane clone that is planted here. Such location has almost compensated for the absence of a photoperiod house for synchronized flowering.

Research involved at our Dobuilevu Research Station
→ Largest and only collection of sugarcane germplasm in Fiji with well over 900 clones contributing to the gene-pool for crossing
→ Sugarcane flower crossing for producing new clones of sugarcane based on desirable traits inherited from parents.
→ Collection of sugarcane pollens for dusting on sugarcane female flowers
→ Drying and processing of sugarcane flowers (fuzz) before transferrin to SRIF Rarawai for further processing.
